Manawatu Standard editorial, June 20, 2019:
The threat to freedom of speech is trivialized
We have always had censorship in New Zealand, and this has worsened since the corporatization of the media. No one with credible evidence that undermines an official narrative can expect to receive any publicity.
Philip Arps is not guilty of any crime. By disseminating the fake video of the Christchurch "shooting", he has committed no more than an indiscretion — whatever the law says. His suggestions for the presentation of the video are puerile, not criminal.
The Standard's unidentified "expert on racism" calls Arps "an unrepentant, hardcore white supremacist". But being a supremacist is not, in itself, a punishable offence.
